Family Income Form

You do not need to apply for your child to receive free school meals. However, it is extremely important that the family income inquiry form be filled out to ensure funding for our programs.

Immunization Requirements

On June 13, 2019, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation removing non-medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements for children. The United States is currently experiencing the worst outbreak of measles in more than 25 years, with outbreaks in pockets of New York primarily driving the crisis. As a result of non-medical vaccination exemptions, many communities across New York have unacceptably low rates of vaccination, and those unvaccinated children can often attend school where they may spread the disease to other unvaccinated students, some of whom cannot receive vaccines due to medical conditions. This new law will help protect the public amid this ongoing outbreak. For more information please visit the the attached link.

Applying For Public Schools

NYC families can use myschools to apply to public schools from 3-K to high school. Get started by creating an account. Then explore your children's personalized school options and get guidance on the admissions process from start to finish.

School open houses and fairs are an opportunity for you to learn about your school options and the admissions process. This year, we remain committed to offering robust admissions resources and supporting virtual events; however, due to the ongoing public health crisis, in-person events are not considered safe for students, their families, or school staff. Therefore, the format and dates for high school events, as listed in the 2021 NYC High School and Specialized High Schools Admissions Guide, are changing.

This fall, we invite you to:

  1. Watch the High School Admissions Video Series | Anytime, Anywhere. Based on the presentations we usually give live at the high school fairs, these videos walk you through how to apply to high school and participate in Specialized High Schools admissions. New videos, including detailed MySchools tutorials, are coming soon. Click here to access the videos.

  2. Attend the NYC CTE Virtual High School Fairs | November 16 - December 5, 2020. Learn about Career and Technical Education (CTE) high schools at these virtual events, which are open to all NYC students and their families. Find out more and register here.

  3. Visit schools’ websites to learn about virtual open houses/virtual tours | All high schools are encouraged to offer virtual opportunities for families to find out more about them. Starting in November, high schools will be posting information for potential applicants on their websites. This will include:

    1. A schedule and links to any live or recorded events.

    2. Videos and/or other media.

    3. Contact information for families who want to speak with school staff.

You can find each high school’s website on its school page in the searchable online MySchools directory. High schools are submitting their updated website information on a rolling basis, and we are updating their page in MySchools over the next several weeks. You can also reach out to high schools directly. Contact information is on each high school’s page in MySchools.

As previously mentioned, the high school application and Specialized High Schools registration periods are not yet open, and students will have additional time to apply and register. The dates and deadlines listed in the 2021 NYC High School and Specialized High Schools Admissions Guide—including all application, registration, test, and audition dates—are changing.

  • High Schools:

  • The high school application for students entering high school in fall 2021 will open during the week of January 18, 2021. Families will be notified when the application opens.

The deadline for families to submit their high school application is the week of February 22, 2021.

  • ·Geographic priority for admissions will be eliminated over a 2-year period, beginning with the immediate elimination of district priority, followed by other geographic priorities in the next admissions cycle.

·In consultation with their school communities, screened high schools can choose to remove their screens, utilize the Educational Option admissions method, or maintain academic screening. For those that maintain academic screening, we encourage schools to implement a Diversity in Admissions priority.

·Schools that choose to maintain academic screening will be able to use a combination of students’ 2018-2019 state tests and grades, and the grades from the first part of last year for their screening criteria. Schools that have used their own assessments may continue to do so as long as those assessments can be administered equitably, fairly, and safely.

·Arts high schools will move to a common virtual audition system that will allow students to submit their audition materials online. Students will only need to create one audition that can be submitted for all schools that require it.

    Specialized High Schools:

Registration for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) and LaGuardia High School auditions will open on December 21. Starting this year, families will indicate their Specialized High School preference order at the time of registration.

The deadline for families to register for the SHSAT is January 15, 2021.

The SHSAT will be administered starting on January 27, 2021 to 8th grade public school students. Exact test dates and other details are forthcoming.

Families can use MySchools ( to explore schools, register for the SHSAT and LaGuardia High School auditions, and submit their high school application with 12 program choices in preference order.  Families can also submit their registration and application through their current school counselor or through a Family Welcome Center.

  • ·Additionally, we are required by State law to administer the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). To ensure health and safety of our staff and students, the exam will be administered in students’ own middle schools to reduce travel and different cohorts of students intermixing. Test registration will open in on Monday, December 21, 2020.

  • Audition programs:

Virtual auditions: This year, all high school auditions will be held virtually through the Virtual Audition Submission Tool. All high school programs that use the “audition” admissions method, including the programs at LaGuardia High School, will use the centralized Virtual Audition Submission Tool.

  • Middle School:

·All middle school screens will be paused for this year. This includes academic screens, school-based assessments, composite scores, and auditions. Students will be admitted through a lottery-based system.

·District and geographic priorities, as well as Diversity in Admissions priorities, will still apply for those middle schools that have them.

·The middle school application will open the week of January 11.
